The story behind the sound

Explore how music shapes cities, countries, communities, and culture. Each week, the Society of Sound podcast takes you beyond the music — into the stories that make sound unforgettable.

People sitting at outdoor tables of a café called 'Camera A Sud' on a cobblestone street, surrounded by yellow buildings with green and brown shutters, under a clear blue sky.
A woman in a black jacket and blue jeans is smiling and pointing at a large poster of Lucio Dalla outside an exhibition entrance. The entrance has a large arched marquee with a photograph of Lucio Dalla wearing a hat and glasses. There is a smaller promotional sign on a stand to the right of the entrance with text in Italian. The woman is standing on a terrazzo floor with a red waiting line marker that says "ATTENDERE."

About the podcast

Society of Sound is a podcast that explores how music shapes the identity of communities and culture. Episodes drop weekly and connect sound to place, politics, and belonging — from the artists bringing people together through their art to the intricate stories within songs.

Season 1 highlighted the French #MeToo movement through Francophone popular music, capturing the voices and the stories behind that important, cultural moment.

Season 2 is coming soon, taking you to Bologna, Italy, and inside the timeless melodies of Lucio Dalla, exploring how his music represents the experiences of the Italian people.

Meet your host, Marianna

A woman with shoulder-length brown hair, wearing glasses and a multicolored striped sweater, smiling outdoors in front of green foliage.

Society of Sound is hosted by Marianna Krumrine — a pianist, teacher, and cultural anthropologist whose work explores how music shapes identity, community, and social change. She is currently based in Paris, where she is conducting field research and enjoying all the city has to offer.

Her work dives into popular music, (post)coloniality, and gender relations, with a particular interest in how women shape space and identity within the French hip-hop scene. Having lived in both France and Italy, and being fluent in French and Italian, her experiences abroad and in the field inspired the creation of Society of Sound.

Drawing on a lifelong love of music and her academic expertise, Marianna brings thoughtful, unique perspectives to each episode, connecting artists, cities, and cultural movements through storytelling.
